Kendrick Lamar (K-Dot) - "C4"






K-Dot's "C4" Mixtape (2009) is inspired by Lil’ Wayne’s 2008 album The Carter 3 comprising mostly of freestyles over instrumentals from Wayne’s album in addition to a number of original tracks. Kendrick’s re imagining of Wayne’s album is a very insightful listen into the evolution of his style, as well as drawing up an interesting comparison between the two artists.

Kendrick Lamar (K-Dot) - "Training Day"



This tape, from 2005, shows a much rawer young rapper, here we see a Kendrick who clearly aspires to be like other rappers, and hasn’t come into his own yet, but the lyrical talent is evident nonetheless, and the tape is definitely worth a listen. The tape sees K.Dot freestyling over a range of classic beats, as well as a number of original cuts with appearances from Punch and Jay Rock, it also contains segments of interview with a surprisingly level-headed 17 year old Kendrick; a good insight into the developing mind of the young artist…
